Why does the Church ask for people to give their money?

New Testament commandment to Give:  Lay by in store
The Church of Christ strives to follow the New Testament pattern of giving.  Many denominational churches and other religious organizations promote the idea of tithing.  However, while tithing is a Biblical term, it was only practiced in the Old Testament.  1 Corinthians 16 gives us answers to many questions about New Testament Church giving.
1 Corinthians 16:1-2 KJV
(1)  Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
(2)  Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

WHEN should we give
“Upon the first day of the week”.  We should do this when we meet on the first day of the week – or Sunday.  Not any other day of the week.  This also suggest this should be done systematically and regularly.

WHO should give
Paul states “let every one of you”.  This means every Christian has this responsibility.  None are excluded.
WHAT should be given

God requires that Christians lay by in a common store or treasury for His work.  This suggests a purposeful, thoughtful giving.
2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
 
Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance says of the word “purpose” in this verse:  to choose for oneself before another thing (prefer), that is, (by implication) to propose (intend):
To purpose therefore is to willingly predetermine what we will give rather than hap hazarding giving based on what we happen to have left on our wallet by the time we arrive for worship service on Sunday.

HOW MUCH should be given
1 Corinthians 16:2 says to give as “as God hath prospered him”, this implies proportionate giving.  Earlier, we mentioned tithing done in the Old Testament.  Tithing or giving 10% worked the same way; the more prosperous would be expected to give more.  When our financial situation improves it should also reflect in our giving.
2 Corinthians 9:7 also tells us not to give “grudgingly, or of necessity”.  Christians should be willing contributors and not reluctant givers. 

WHY should be give
1 Corinthians 16:2 also says “that there be no gatherings when I come”
Opportunities and necessities arise; we should be prepared. The collection can be used in efforts to spread the gospel:

Romans 10:14-15 KJV (14) How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? (15)  And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
And can also be used to help the saints in need:
Galatians 6:10 KJV  As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
